Romeo and Juliet Postings

Romeo and Juliet Final Project

In culmination of our unit on William Shakespeare’s tragic drama, Romeo and Juliet, you will choose one of the projects suggested below. Circle your choice, sign your name, and have one of your parents sign it as well. Then return to our next class meeting prepared to commit to your project. If you have a creative idea of comparable measure, seek my approval before you begin.

1. The setting of the play is fourteenth-century Italy, but actors in Shakespeare’s time would have worn Elizabethan costumes. Create a costume book in which you draw and label your choice of five costumes that would be worn by actors in different scenes of the play. For each costume, write a detailed description of what is going on in the scene and why the actor would be wearing the outfit you’ve illustrated. Each costume must be featured on its own page, and the character, act, and scene number must be accurately labeled and presented in chronological order. Include a works cited page in which you alphabetically (by author’s name) list all your resources.

2. Draw a detailed blueprint or create a three dimensional model of the Globe Theater. You must label at least ten elements on your blueprint or model. Base your work on research and include all resources referred to in a works cited page. Type a one-page research report on the history of the globe, and be careful not to PLAGARIZE. Include a works cited page in which you alphabetically (by author’s name) list all your resources.

3. Design four scenes from Romeo and Juliet. Display the scenes on a poster, several posters, or in shadow boxes. Clearly label each scene according to the act and scene. Arrange the scenes in chronological order. Include a minimum one-half page explanation of each scene. Writing must be final draft quality.

4. Select and depict ten or twelve scenes from the play for a colorful, multiple-panel quilt. Make each panel out of paper or fabric if you choose. For each panel of the quilt, create an illustration and cite a passage that includes the act, and scene you’ve visually represented. Create a border for each panel and tie or string the panels together to form a large wall hanging. Acts and scenes must be in chronological order. NO notebook paper accepted.

5. Design a comic book or an illustrated children’s book that tells the story of Romeo and Juliet. You may use the words of Shakespeare, or you may write and illustrate a more modern version of the story. Type a one-page paper, which explains why you chose to represent characters and elements the way you did. Minimum number of pages for the book is 12.

6. Create a movie soundtrack of Romeo and Juliet in which you select a minimum of ten contemporary songs to accompany a modern version of the Shakespeare’s tragic drama. You must include an explanation of your selection of each piece of music and identify the act and scene number along with why your selection is appropriate. Print out the lyrics for each song and include citation of specific lines in your explanation of the selection. Create a color CD case with table of contents. Be sure to assemble your ensemble in chronological order.

All projects will be assessed according to this rubric. Be sure to refer to it as you work on the assignment. This is a BIG deal, worth 50 points.
